Prologue Animatic: Style Test V1

This video is a test I made to see if I could convert my storyboards into an animatic, meaning a rough draft of the scene, to explore the style, timing, and mise-en-scene. I will explore other styles in upcoming tests.

Poprishchin

Poprishchin

Titular Councillor · The Diarist

A 42-year-old clerk who sharpens the Director's quills and dreams far above his station. Ignored at the office and invisible in the street, his diary charts a comic descent — from overhearing dogs talk to declaring himself King of Spain.

Poprishchin as Ferdinand VIII

Poprishchin as Ferdinand VIII

The King of Spain

The clerk remade by delusion. Reasoning that only rank keeps Sophie from him — and that rank is arbitrary — he decides he is the rightful heir to the vacant Spanish throne, signs his work “Ferdinand VIII,” and waits for his deputies to carry him to court.

Mavra

Mavra

His Servant

Poprishchin's blunt, long-suffering maid — nearly the only soul who actually speaks to him. Her plain household presence marks how far his fantasies have drifted from the little room he never truly leaves.

The Director

The Director

His Excellency · Sophie's Father

Head of the department, whose quills Poprishchin sharpens and whose daughter he loves. Admired and envied, he hardens in Poprishchin's mind into a schemer and a Mason — gatekeeper of the world that shuts him out.

Sophie

Sophie

The Director's Daughter

The radiant young woman Poprishchin worships from afar. Glimpsed flitting from a carriage in the rain, she never knows he exists — and her coming marriage is the loss that tips his longing into madness.

Teplov

Teplov

Sophie's Suitor

The dashing court officer who wins Sophie. Handsome and well-ranked, he is everything Poprishchin is not — the rival whose easy advantages convince the clerk that only rank stands between him and greatness.

The Chief of the Division

The Chief of the Division

His Superior

The section head who scolds Poprishchin for his sloppy copying — “you rush around like a madman.” A petty embodiment of the rung just above him, he stands for the whole ladder of office the clerk can never climb.

The Head of the Asylum

The Head of the Asylum

The Grand Inquisitor

Committed at last, Poprishchin cannot recognize the madhouse. He believes he has reached Spain, and that its keeper is first a Spanish official — then the Grand Inquisitor himself. The beatings meant as treatment become, to him, the tortures of the Inquisition.

The Dogs — Madgie and Fido

The Dogs — Madgie & Fido

The Correspondents

Sophie's lapdog Madgie and her friend Fido — who, Poprishchin becomes convinced, write letters to one another. In their gossip he reads the truths he cannot face: the Director's ambitions, Sophie's love for Teplov, and her laughter at him.

The Mongrel

The Mongrel

The Stray

A street cur of no breeding who swaggers along certain he is a creature of importance — dismissed by the pampered Madgie as “frightfully stupid.” His deluded self-regard is Poprishchin's own: a mongrel mistaking himself for nobility.

The Zverkov Women

The Zverkov Women

Fido's Mistresses

The two ladies — one old, one young — who own Fido and live up on the fifth floor of the shabby Zverkov House. Trailing them through the rain, Poprishchin first hears the dogs speak; their crowded tenement is the ordinary world his fantasies rise above.

Filatka and Miroshka

Filatka & Miroshka

The Players

The rustic clowns of a popular one-act vaudeville — “Filatka and Miroshka, Rivals” — that Poprishchin watches at the theatre and laughs at heartily. Their broad peasant farce mirrors, in miniature, his own losing contest for a bride.

The Coachman

The Coachman

On the Box

The driver of the Director's carriage — and the working men of St. Petersburg who move through the diary's margins, present and unremarked: the city's churning human backdrop.
